Military Discharge Reviews

WDVA provides assistance in requesting a Review of Military Discharges that were given Under Less Then Honorable Conditions.

The types of discharges include, but are not limited to General Discharges; Under Other Then Honorable; Undesirable; Bad Conduct and Dishonorable Discharges; given under Administrative Review, Summary or General Court-Martial.

Each Branch of Service has set up a process for reviewing unfavorable discharges. There are two types of reviews:

NOTE: NO DISCHARGE AUTOMATICALLY CHANGES TO HONORABLE AFTER SIX MONTHS.

The Discharge Review Board reviews discharges of former service members, except those given by reason of a sentence of a General Court Martial or over 15 years since discharge. The purpose of the review is to determine if the discharge was granted in a proper manner, i.e. in accordance with regulatory procedures in effect at the time, and that it was equitable, i.e. giving consideration to current policy, mitigating facts, and the total record.

The Board for Correction of Military Records reviews discharges to correct errors or remove injustices from any military record. This includes all General Court Martial’s, discharges over 15 years old, and RE-Codes.

What Information will I need to start the Process?

  1. Your name
  2. Complete address, City, State, and Zip Code (including apartment number, Lot # etc.)
  3. Contact Telephone Number
  4. Social Security Number
  5. Date of Birth
  6. Branch of Service, Date of Entry and Separation
  7. Type of discharge and if possible Narrative Reason for Discharge.

If you have your DD 214 you should make an appointment to see your County Veterans Service Officer or write to Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA), ATTN:  Discharge Review, P. O. Box 7843, Madison, WI  53707-7843 or call 1-800-WIS-VETS (947-8387) and ask to speak to someone about a Discharge Review. If you live in the Milwaukee area, you should call (414) 382-1712 and ask to speak to someone about a Discharge Review.

Once an inquiry is received, we will send you a packet either for the Discharge Review Board or the Board for Correction of Military Records. You must return the forms we send to you so we can request your personnel records. This process takes approximately 30-90 days after the request has been sent in. Once the personnel records are received, WDVA will screen them and advise the veteran of what his/her options are.

If it is deemed advisable to apply for a discharge review, the entire process may take 12 to 24 months, depending on the Branch of Service.
